REPORT: ‘Highly motivated’ Chelsea forward may consider summer exit due to limited playing time

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku may consider leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer if he fails to secure a regular starting spot under head coach Enzo Maresca, according to a new report.

Nkunku has netted 10 goals across all competitions this season, taking advantage of opportunities in the Carabao Cup and Conference League.

However, he has struggled to earn Premier League minutes, with Nicolas Jackson establishing a strong partnership with Cole Palmer in the Blues’ front line.

So far, the 26-year-old forward has been relegated to just 151 minutes in the Premier League, with his sole start coming on the opening day against Manchester City, where he played the first 57 minutes at the Etihad.

Having joined Chelsea for £52 million in July 2023 on a six-year contract, the French international could become increasingly frustrated by his limited role if the situation persists until next summer, as per Sky Sports Germany.

The former RB Leipzig forward is reportedly “highly motivated” and unwilling to settle for a backup role under Maresca. During his time at RB Leipzig, Nkunku scored 47 Bundesliga goals.

He also registered 11 goals in the Champions League and Europa League, helping Leipzig reach the Europa League semi-finals.

In West London however, the Frenchman faces stiff competition not only from Jackson and Palmer but also from a versatile forward line, with Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, and Mykhailo Mudryk vying for wide positions.

Chelsea have enjoyed a decent start to life under Maresca, with the Blues currently placing 4th on the Premier League table.

They are set to play hosts to Mikel Arteta’s struggling Gunners on Sunday, with now as good a time as any to get some points off the North Londoners.

Nkunku will certainly be hoping for a chance to stake his claim for more Premier League action when their local rivals come visiting. Whether Maresca will afford the Frenchman an opportunity at the Bridge, remains to be seen.
