Barcelona have made a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah despite interest from rivals Real Madrid. The German defender is expected to leave the Bundesliga champions when his current contract expires next summer after failing to agree a new one.
Jonathan Tah who was a key part of Xabi Alonso’s side that won the Bundesliga undefeated last season was previously linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the summer. The 28-year old defender has been recently linked to a move to Camp Nou and a deal could materialize in the coming months.
A season-ending injury suffered by Real Madrid’s Eder Militao first linked them to the defender but Barcelona could be clear favorites to sign him due to the strong relationship between his agent, Pini Zahavi and Joan Laporta.
Tah is a versatile defender who can play as a second defender in a four-man defense and can also be deployed as part of a back three. He is dominant in the air and confident with the ball and will be a valuable asset to any team.
With Hansi Flick at the helm of affairs at the Catalan club, Tah could favor a move to Barcelona over other clubs as he had featured under the German coach when he was in charge of Germany and would slot in seamlessly to the lineup.
Tah has featured in all of Bayer Leverkusen’s games this season as they look to defend the league and club double they won last season. It remains to be seen which of the top clubs in Europe will secure the services of the ‘big’ defender.
