Former head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Gernot Rohr, has pinpointed the decisive match for Benin Republic’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualification.
The Cheetahs of Benin are set to face the 2013 AFCON champions at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan tomorrow before travelling to Tripoli for their final Group D encounter against Libya.
Playing Nigeria at a neutral venue in Côte d’Ivoire, rather than at home, is a challenge for the Franco-German coach, who believes a home advantage could have benefited Benin’s campaign.
“In our group, the three other countries have had the chance to play at home, unlike us who must play on neutral ground. So far, playing in Abidjan has worked, and we hope to continue that,” Rohr stated, as quoted by Mega Sports.
However, the former Super Eagles boss suggested that Benin’s qualification will likely hinge on their final match against Libya, rather than the Nigeria clash.
“But I think the decisive match will be in Libya, in Tripoli. We’ll be ready for that, especially with our current mindset and players who have found rhythm with their clubs. We’ll do everything we can to reach AFCON 2025 in Morocco,” he added.
Nigeria currently leads Group D and needs only a draw from either the Benin or Rwanda games to secure their qualification. Benin, in second place with six points, will be aiming for a win to boost their chances.
