Osimhen equals Odegbami’s Nigeria record, closing in on Yekini

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen became Nigeria’s joint-second highest goalscorer after his goal in their 1-1 draw against Benin.

Galatasaray hitman Osimhen led Nigeria’s line when they took on Benin at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny. The Super Eagles were favourites to claim the win, but they labored badly.

Despite seeing more of the ball and bossing the play, Nigeria fell behind just 16 minutes into the game courtesy of Mohamed Tijani.

The Super Eagles had to wait until the 81st minutes before finally getting their breakthrough, and it was courtesy of Osimhen. The Galatasaray man rose highest to meet a cross from Moses Simon and converted his effort to make it 1-1.

Aside from the fact that the game helped Nigeria claim a draw and sealed their spot at the AFCON next year, it ensured that Osimhen drew level on goals with Segun Odegami, Nigeria’s second-highest goalscorer.

Odegbami produced 23 goals in 46 Super Eagles appearance. And Osimhen’s goal on Thursday also took him to 23 goals in 37 games.

As it stands, the 25-year-old hitman is just 14 goals behind Rashidi Yekini, who has 37 goals in 58 appearances for the Super Eagles.

Realistically, with his talent, Osimhen will like break the goals record. However, he has to win something with Nigeria soon to ensure that he leaves a lasting legacy at the end of his playing career.

With the Nations Cup ticket already in the bag, Osimhen and his teammates will be looking to string up some good performances and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
