The Super Eagles’ final group-stage game in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers ended in disappointment as Rwanda came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
While the 2013 AFCON champions had already secured their spot in Morocco, the loss ended their unbeaten streak in the qualifiers.
With interim coach Augustine Eguavoen rotating his squad and resting stars like Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Wilfred Ndidi, Nigeria fielded a less familiar lineup.
Despite the changes, the Super Eagles began the match confidently, dominating possession but failing to convert early opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Samuel Chukwueze scored in the 59th minute, dribbling to the heart of Rwanda’s defense and lashing a shot past Ntwari Fiacre. The goal, his first for Nigeria since September 2023, seemed to put the hosts on course for a routine victory.
However, Rwanda had other plans. Ange Mutsinzi drew the visitors level in the 72nd minute, heading home from a set-piece. Just three minutes later, Innocent Nshuti capitalised on defensive lapses to give Rwanda the lead, silencing the home crowd.
Despite a late push from Nigeria, the Amavubi held on for a historic win. While Rwanda’s spirited performance earned them three points, it was not enough to secure qualification, as they finished third in Group D, tied on eight points with Benin but behind on goal difference. Nigeria topped the group with 11 points, followed by Benin with eight, and Libya with five.
