Laliga abandons plans for US-based match

Laliga has abandoned plans to host the match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Miami next month.

The United States had been suggested as the venue for the blockbuster match next month which first sparked controversies as no Laliga match had ever been hosted outside Spain. The only incidence of matches held outside Spain has been the Spanish Super Cup which has been held in Saudi Arabia since 2020.

President of the Spanish Laliga Javier Tebas who has shown interest in bringing football matches to other countries had needed approval from FIFA, UEFA and the Spanish Football Association for feasibility of the match. He has now accepted that the match has come too soon to happen and is looking at the 2025/26 season for a first of its kind.

A first attempt to host a Laliga game between Barcelona and Girona six years in Miami six years ago was first blocked by FIFA before the football organization began its policy review few months ago to allow for European league matches to be held outside of Europe.

Subject to a change in the current rules, Tebas can prepare to host a first-ever Laliga match outside of Spain when the 2024/25 season commences.

Barcelona will now host Atletico Madrid at the Olympic stadium with renovations ongoing at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona currently top the Laliga standings with 33 points from 13 games played and are 6 points ahead of rivals Real Madrid and 7 points ahead of Atletico Madrid after a superb start to the season under German coach Hansi Flick.
