San Marino produced a spirited secons half performance to overcome a one-goal deficit and defeat Liechtenstein 3-1 in their final game of the UEFA Nations League
Europe’s minors San Marino returned to action on Monday night with a game against Liechtenstein at Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz. San Marino were on four points, and they needed a win to seal promotion to group C.
The might started badly for the visitors, as Aron Sele scored for Liechtenstein in the 40th minute. San Marino had some good chances in the first half, but they did not take them.
However, the visitors increased the ante and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half. Lorenzo Lazzari scored the equalizer in the 46th minute. Then, Nicola Nanni and Alessandro Golinucci scored the second and third to wrap up the 3-1 result.
The victory was just San Marino’s third-ever win in their football history. All their wins have come against Liechtenstein. The last win was in September as they defeated Liechtenstein 1-0. It was also their second win in the last 20 years.
San Marino’s win automatically sealed their promotion to the group C of the UEFA Nations League. Latvia and Luxembourg, are set to drop down to group D alongside Azerbaijan and Lithuania.
For a country like San Marino that has been consistently bruised and battered by many top teams in Europe, promotion to group C is their biggest achievement in their history. They will be looking to impress in league C next season.
