Inter Miami head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has resigned from his role in the aftermath of the shock MLS Cup playoffs loss to Atlanta United.
The Argentine coach who replaced Phil Neville in June 2023, cited personal reasons for his resignation. The 62-year old guided Inter Miami to a MLS-record number of points in the regular season as they recorded 74 points from 22 wins, 8 draws and just 4 losses.
Martino had previously enjoyed success at Atlanta United where he won the MLS cup in 2018. He also previously had spells at the Mexican national team and also at Barcelona where he managed Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba who all went on to join him at the Herons.
Despite inheriting a struggling team, Martino transformed the fortunes of the club in his short time. After the arrival of Lionel Messi in 2023, Inter Miami won their first ever trophy by clinching the 2023 Leagues Cup. They however failed to qualify for the playoffs last season.
The stakes were high going into the new season and they won the MLS Supporters’ shield. There were also high hopes going into the playoffs but they fell at the first hurdle to Martino’s former club.
His departure leaves club owner David Beckham needing to search for a successor to lead the star-studded team to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup which they qualified for by winning the regular season.
Martino will have the chance to say goodbye to his Inter Miami family on friday when he speaks at his final press conference at the club.
