Official: Genoa appoint Arsenal legend as coach

Serie A club Genoa have confirmed the appointment of retired Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as their permanent coach.

Genoa have had a bad start to the Serie A campaign this season. Alberto Gilardino, who guided them to promotion and an 11th place finish in Serie A last season, has failed to produce the goods this season.

The club currently sit 17th in Serie A, with ten points after twelve games. They are only two points above bottom-placed Venezia.

Following his poor run of results, Genoa decided to part ways with Gilardino on Tuesday. As his replacement, the Serie A side announced the appointment of Vieira on Monday.

Vieira has constantly been on the move in recent years. He worked at New York City between 2016 and 2018. Then, he was employed as Nice coach between 2018 and 2020.

He former Arsenal captain then got a big move to the English Premier League in 2021. He was manager of Crystal Palace until he got sacked in 2023, after a poor run of results.

Vieira’s last job was at Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, where he left at the end of last season. The former France international is not new to Italian football, as he played at Juventus and AC Milan before his retirement.

Vieira signed a two-year contract and be with Genoa until the summer of 2026. will be looking to improve Genoa’s fortunes and push them higher in the Serie A table.

The 48-year-old tactician made his name as a player at Arsenal. He was with the North Londoners between 1996 and 2005 before leaving for Juventus. His time at Arsenal was their most successful era.
