Former Super Eagles midfielder, Etim Esin, has expressed his concerns over the lack of creativity in the current Nigerian national team.
Speaking in an interview with Complete Sports, Esin pointed out that the absence of a genuine playmaker is a key issue, and the failure to replace the creative influence of past stars like Jay-Jay Okocha, Henry Nwosu, and others.
Esin stressed that the Super Eagles are struggling in the creative department, with players failing to step up and provide the spark needed to break down defences and dictate play.
“Another issue is the lack of a creative midfielder — a proper number 10 who can orchestrate plays, provide assists, and unsettle opposing teams,” Esin said. “That magic touch of players like Jay-Jay Okocha, Henry Nwosu, or even myself is missing. We don’t have naturally gifted playmakers anymore. Everyone is just average.”
The former international then turned his attention to Alex Iwobi, who has often been hailed as one of Nigeria’s key creative figures in recent times. However, Esin was quick to point out that Iwobi’s abilities fall short when compared to his uncle, Okocha.
“For instance, people keep talking about Iwobi, but he can’t do half of what Okocha did. That comparison doesn’t hold water,” Esin stated,
Iwobi was recently on the scoresheet for Fulham during their 1-4 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Craven Cottage at the weekend. Despite the loss, his Puskas-worthy goal took the spotlight.
