Paris Saint-Germain and Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi has shared his excitement over his nomination for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.
The defender has described the recognition—which is the second time in two years— as a proud moment in his career.
However, the Moroccan defender admitted that he faces stiff competition, with Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman widely regarded as the frontrunner for the prestigious accolade.
Speaking to Brut via maliactu.net, Hakimi reflected on the significance of being shortlisted for the honour, labeling it as a satisfactory achievement for him as a player.
“It’s a source of pride and satisfaction, especially knowing that the work I’ve been doing for a long time will be rewarded with this nomination. It’s true that it’s an important trophy on an individual level, but I’m happy to be here. I hope I can win it, but if not, I’m happy to be here, and it makes me want to keep working.” He said.
Lookman, whose stellar performances for Atalanta and Nigeria have earned him widespread praise, is considered the favourite to win the award. Still, Hakimi’s consistent excellence at both club and international levels makes him a formidable contender.
The competition comes amid comparisons to the recent Ballon d’Or upset, where Rodri of Manchester City edged out Vinícius Júnior to claim the title against fan expectations. Some pundits have drawn parallels between that result and the CAF Player of the Year race, suggesting that Hakimi could yet spring a surprise.
As the CAF Awards ceremony draws closer, the focus will be on whether Lookman’s electrifying form can carry him to glory or if Hakimi can defy expectations and claim one of African football’s most coveted prizes.
