Argentina star Lionel Messi is set to sign a contract extension at Major League Soccer club Inter Miami according to reports.
Messi had a thrilling stay in Europe, spending most of his years at Spanish giants Barcelona before switching to French side PSG in 2021.
However, after a fortuitous two-year stay in France that saw a sections of the fans turn against him due to their failure to win the UEFA Champions League, Messi joined US-based side Inter Miami in unarguably MLS’ biggest deal.
Since his move, the 37-year-old attacker has been brilliant, registering 34 goals and 18 assists in 38 appearances for Inter Miami.
However, Messi’s contract at Inter Miami is set to expire at the end of 2025. But even at 37, he is undoubtedly the best player in the MLS. As such, they will be looking to extend his deal past the December 2025 expiry date.
According to Transfer News Live, Messi is set to extend his contract beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico. The contract could even be extended beyond 2027.
As it stands, nothing has emerged from Messi’s camp yet. But it is not expected to be a tough one for Inter Miami. Moreover, he has his close friend Luis Suarez at the club, and there are already talks linking Neymar Jnr. with a transfer to them.
Still, Messi has already previously stated his desire to return to his boyhood club Newells Old Boys. As such, he may choose to return to Argentina at the end of his current contract.
