Mikel Arteta has expressed satisfaction after a comprehensive 5-1 victory for Arsenal over Sporting Lisbon.
Goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard secured a resounding victory for Arsenal which equalled their biggest ever victory away from home in the UEFA Champions League.
“For sure, especially against opposition we played at their home who have not lost a game in 18 months – they have been in top form here – so to play with the level, the determination, the purpose and the fluidity we showed today, I am very pleased,” said Arteta.
The win moved the Gunners up to seventh on the 36-team table and ensured they claimed a first away victory in this season’s continental competition after previously drawing at Atalanta and losing to Inter Milan.
“The team played with so much courage, because they are so good. When I’m watching them live they are so good! They were all exceptional today. It was a big performance, a big win and we are really happy.”
Goncalo Inacio’s goal shortly after halftime threatened to spark a comeback for Sporting but a penalty by Bukayo Saka and a late goal from Trossard ensured the Gunners left Portugal with all three points.
“The performance was there a few times when we have played big teams. That’s the level that we have to be able to cope and you have to make it happen, and that creates belief”, he added.
Arsenal are next in action in the UEFA Champions League when they face French side AS Monaco on the 11th of December at the Emirates stadium.
