Reigning Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid have sent a congratulatory message to bitter rivals Barcelona on their 125th anniversary.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are two of the biggest clubs in Spain and Europe. Between them, there are 148 trophies, with Barcelona claiming 104 titled, while Real Madrid have 105.
Both clubs have also had the lion share of players who have rocked the football world. Barcelona have had legends like Johan Cruyff, Lionel Messi, and Diego Armando Maradona, while Real Madrid have had Ronaldo Nazario, Cristiano Ronaldo, Santiago Bernabeu, among many others.
Asides from footballing reason, Barcelona also have a bitter rivalry with Real Madrid because of the regions of Spain they are based. Barcelona are from the Catalunya region which has been seeking to separate from Spain for a long time. Madrid, on the other hand, is the capital of Spain, and most Catalunyans believe they are usually favored.
Today, Barcelona mark their 125th anniversary, and they’ve put in a lot of activities in place, including a gala.
Surprisingly, Real Madrid put differences aside and sent them a congratulatory message on social media.
In their tweet, the reigning La Liga champions wrote, “Congratulations on your 125th anniversary Barcelona. It is an honour for Real Madrid to compete with a great rival like you throughout our history.”
Both teams have already met this season, and Barcelona ran out with a handsome 4-0 win. The Blaugrana currently top La Liga with four points, but Real Madrid have played a game less.
