Xabi Alonso to sanction Victor Boniface for reckless driving

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has sparked widespread criticism in Germany after footage surfaced of him using his mobile phone while driving recklessly on the highway.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has been sidelined due to a thigh injury sustained during Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers, was seen scrolling on his phone while driving his Mercedes Benz at 141 kilometres per hour—exceeding the highway speed limit of 120 kilometres per hour.

The images, which Boniface reportedly shared on social media while hanging out with Nigerian rapper Zoro Swagbag, have raised eyebrows among fans and critics alike. Adding to the backlash, Boniface liked the post on his social media account, further tarnishing his image.

German media giant Bild stressed the incident, pointing to Boniface’s troubling disregard for traffic laws. The 23-year-old was involved in a car accident in Frankfurt just weeks ago, escaping with minor injuries.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso addressed the situation, expressing disappointment in the striker’s behaviour.

“It’s not good. It’s not allowed, and it shouldn’t happen,” Alonso said. “We will remind him of his responsibilities, both as a professional footballer and as a person.”

Boniface’s reckless actions come at a time when he is receiving praise for his stellar performances in the Bundesliga, where he has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s title charge. However, this latest controversy could lead to disciplinary measures from the club, with Alonso expected to issue sanctions.

The incident also risks impacting Boniface’s reputation off the pitch, with many calling on the player to show greater responsibility as a role model for young football fans.
