Fulham Nigeria’s star laments missed chances against Spurs

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey has expressed disappointment as his Fulham side were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Fulham created several chances in the game but failed to find the back of the net until the 67th minute when Tom Cairney scored from a brilliant Alex Iwobi assist and the 24-year old believes his side deserved more than a point.

“I think we deserved more,” Bassey said in a post-match interview.

“Fraser Forster [Tottenham’s goalkeeper] made some incredible saves—three that could have been goals.”

Spurs took the lead when Brennan Johnson scored from a Timo Werner cross and had stand-in goalkeeper Forster to thank for not conceding more as Fulham pushed for the victory.

The Cottagers ended the game with ten men as Tom Cairney went from hero to zero when he was sent off for a foul on Spurs forward Dejan Kulusevski as his initial yellow card was upgraded to a red card by the Video Assistant Referee.

“We were a bit unlucky, especially with the red card when we had momentum. But on the bright side, we managed the game well and didn’t concede late, which has been an issue in past matches.”

Fulham had lost their previous league game against Wolves 4-1 at home and they needed a statement result at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

“Hopefully, we gave a good impression to the fans. We’ve got a busy week ahead, so it’s nice to carry some confidence into the next few games”, he added.

Bassey will be in action for Fulham when they play host to Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday in the English Premier League.
