Obinna Nwobodo secures extended stay at FC Cincinnati amid stellar MLS career

Nigeria midfielder Obinna Nwobodo has earned a contract extension at Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Cincinnati, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top talents.

The club confirmed the extension on their official website, announcing they have exercised Nwobodo’s contract option, along with those of Miles Robinson, Sergio Santos, and Álvaro Barreal, who is currently on loan at Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.

“FC Cincinnati has exercised the contract options on Obinna Nwobodo, Miles Robinson, and Sergio Santos,” the club’s statement reads.

Since joining FC Cincinnati from Turkish outfit Göztepe in 2022, Nwobodo has been a vital component of the team’s midfield, making 80 appearances and scoring twice.

Beyond his contributions on the field, the former Flying Eagles star has also made headlines as the highest-earning Nigerian player in the MLS.

Nwobodo’s influence has been central to Cincinnati’s rise in the league. His ability to control the tempo of games, coupled with his defensive work rate, has earned him praises.

With his new contract extension, the 27-year-old is set to continue playing a pivotal role as Cincinnati look to build on their recent successes and challenge for more silverware in the upcoming season.

FC Cincinnati have opted to retain Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem for the upcoming season, ensuring his continued role in the team’s defence. However, American centre-back of Nigerian descent Joey Akpunonu will not be returning to the club
