Former English Premier League champions Manchester United have opened talks with Sporting CP for the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Manchester United have been billed to make some changes to their squad since Portuguese tactician Ruben Amorim took charge of the team in November.
This is as some of the players have failed to live up to the billing, while others have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s style of play.
One of the biggest names that has been mentioned at Old Trafford is 26-year-old Gyokeres. The former Coventry man has been on fire for Sporting, producing 24 goals and four assists in 21 games across all competitions.
He did not just start this season though, as he registered 37 goals and eleven assists in 50 appearances. Due to his impressive performances, many tip clubs in Europe have showed interest in securing his services.
Naturally, Manchester United will be one of the clubs in the mix, because Amorim who brought Gyokeres into the limelight is now in Manchester. And coaches like to carry their best players along when they move to new clubs.
In a new development according to Transfer News Live, Manchester United have already contacted Sporting for Gyokeres’ services, and talks have been proceeding well. However, they would have to sell one or more players to finance the deal.
This is due to the stringent financial rules put in place by UEFA and the Premier League.
Gyokeres is expected to cost Manchester United €70 million at least. And Sporting still have the upper hand, as the Sweden international still have three years left on his contract. Hence, they can make a strong stand in the negotiations.
