Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw announced his return to the treatment room in an emotional social media post on Tuesday despite only just making his comeback to the pitch after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Shaw made his first appearance of the 2024/2025 season against Ipswich Town in November during new head coach Ruben Amorim’s first game at the helm, having not made a single appearance under either Erik ten Hag or interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
He later featured in United’s 4-0 thrashing of Everton in December and played a part in their 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. However, the England international has now returned to the treatment table following another injury setback.
“Hi guys, it’s hurting a lot having to write this,” the defender posted on social media on Tuesday. “I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback.
“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period. I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.
“I understand there is going to be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time. But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.
“Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it.”
As a result of this setback, Shaw will miss the Red Devils’ Wednesday trip to North London where they are billed to square up against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners. This comes as a huge blow for Amorim and United as key duo Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo will also miss Wednesday’s tie due to yellow card accumulation.
