Onumonu stresses importance of preparation as Super Falcons gear up for WAFCON

Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu believes adequate preparation will be key to the team’s success as they intensify their build-up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The nine-time African champions recently suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to France in a friendly match in Angers. Despite the loss, Onumonu, who netted Nigeria’s only goal against the formidable Les Bleues, is confident the team has the potential to improve significantly with better preparation.

“We had only two training sessions and despite that, we played very well. In terms of preparation, I wish we had more because with more preparation we can get more information and we can perform better,” Onumonu told Ojb Sports.

The friendly against France marked the Super Falcons’ third game since their participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Last month, they secured back-to-back wins against Algeria in a double-header friendly. By this, showcasing flashes of promise under head coach Justine Madugu.

Onumonu, however, is looking ahead to the summer, emphasising that the team will thrive with more opportunities to train and bond. “It is only telling that when we have more time and with WAFCON in the summer, with more time to prepare, we’ll be a better team,” she added.

The Super Falcons will be hoping for a successful campaign following their disappointing 2024 Olympic outing.
