Pep Guardiola denies ‘fallout’ with star midfielder ahead of Nottingham Forest clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has denied rumors of a rift with Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and has stated that the playmaker is close to a return to the starting lineup.

De Bruyne who has suffered from injuries since the beginning of the season, came on for England international Phil Foden in the 78th minute of Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool and Guardiola has dismissed rumours of a misunderstanding with the 33-year old.

“People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin,” he said. “Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? I don’t want Kevin to play? The guy who has the most talent in the final third. I don’t want it? I have a personal problem with him after nine years together?

“He’s delivered to me the biggest success to this club. I’m desperate to have his best”, Pep Guardiola said when asked in a press conference.

The Belgium captain has been limited to just four starts in all competitions this season and has played just 72 minutes since recovering from the hamstring injury that kept him out of action for a while.

“But he’s been five months injured and two months injured. He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best.”

“I know he is desperate to help us, he gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have”, he continued.

Manchester City are currently fifth in the English Premier League and will look to end a run of seven games without a win when they host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday with De Bruyne pushing for a first start since September 18.
