Fonseca challenges Chukwueze to balance attack with defence amid Besiktas links

AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has stressed Samuel Chukwueze’s need to improve his defensive contributions, as speculation grows over a potential January move to Turkish side Besiktas.

Since joining Milan from Villarreal in the summer, Chukwueze has faced tough competition for a starting role, with players like Yunus Musah often preferred in crucial matches. Despite this, Fonseca has expressed satisfaction with the Nigerian winger’s progress while emphasising areas for improvement.

“Chukwueze is adapting well, and he has an impressive attitude. He’s not stronger than Musah defensively, but he can do the same in some games,” Fonseca told reporters.

The 24-year-old impressed in Milan’s recent 3-0 victory over Empoli, where he came on as a substitute and made a notable impact. Fonseca praised Chukwueze’s effort after the match, particularly his willingness to contribute defensively.

“Empoli played a lot of long balls, and it was important to have this role to help the team. I was also very pleased with the way Chukwueze played this role, who came back into the box twice to play fifth. This module gives us balance,” the Milan boss said.

However, Chukwueze’s limited game time—17 appearances across all competitions with only three goals—has reportedly caught the attention of Besiktas, who are exploring a January move for the Super Eagles winger. Milan, however, view him as essential cover for key attackers Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao, making a mid-season exit unlikely.

Chukwueze will aim to strengthen his case for more starting opportunities as Milan take on Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium on Friday, with the Rossoneri keen to extend their six-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
