Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been confirmed ‘fit and available’ by Liverpool head coach Arne Slot for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Spanish side Girona.
Alisson who has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury in early October, completed the training session on Monday and was named in the Matchday squad by the Dutch coach.
When asked about the 32-year old availability for the match, Slot said, “Yes, he is available. If you can play with Alisson that has been so outstanding for so many years for Liverpool and for the Brazil national team, it speaks for itself really. It is nice to have him back and available.”
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher has deputised for the injured Brazilian for the past two months and has been fantastic for the Reds.
He produced a brilliant save to keep out a Kylian Mbappe penalty in Liverpool’s last Champions League match which was a 2-0 win over Real Madrid.
“But if you look at how his replacement did, it is not easy to do better. Caoimhín did so well so we can say that we have two great goalkeepers that can both do the job for us.
For so many years [Alisson] has been so outstanding, so we are expecting him to do the same for the next few months”, he continued.
Liverpool who are currently top of the new 36-team standings have not conceded a goal in the competition since Matchday one and it remains to be seen who gets the nod to start among both goalkeepers.
