World football governing body FIFA have announced that the 2034 World Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia, while the 2030 edition will take place in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the opening three matches in South America.
FIFA held its congress on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia, and important decisions like the upcoming World Cups hosts were taken.
For the two World Cup editions, only one bid was received for each. Only Spain, Portugal and Morocco bid for the 2030 edition as joints hosts, while only Saudi Arabia bid for the iconic 2034 edition. Since there were no multiple bids, the hosts were decided by acclamation.
The 2030 edition in Spain, Portugal and Morocco is a bit complicated, as the opening three games will take place South America in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark 100 years of the World Cup. For context, the first World Cup was played in Uruguay, that is why FIFA is going back to where it all started.
The rest of the matches will be spread across Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, who despite being in Africa, share a border with Spain.
Then the 2034 edition will see Saudi Arabia become just the second middle-east country to host the World Cup.
Saudi Arabia have gotten a lot of flacks in recent years due to human rights issues. However, it would be tough for FIFA to go back on the decision.
