Ange Postecoglou slams forward after ‘uninspiring’ performance in Europa league draw against Rangers

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has criticized German forward Timo Werner for his disappointing performance in Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Rangers in the UEFA Europa League.

Werner was substituted at halftime following a dismal first half and the Scottish coach was critical of his performance.

“He wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should,” Postecoglou said, when asked why he had withdrawn Werner at the break.

“When you’ve got 18-year-olds, it’s not acceptable to me.”

The former Chelsea and RB Leipzig forward was replaced by Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski who went on to score the equalizer as Spurs battled to salvage a point at Ibrox.

“He’s a senior international, he’s a Germany international. In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options.”, he continued.

The 28-year old first joined Spurs on loan in January 2024 before his signing was made permanent in the summer transfer window.

He has scored just once in nineteen appearances this season and is yet to score in any of the five games he has played in Europe.

“In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable”, he added.

Tottenham Hotspur are next in action in the English Premier League when they travel to bottom-placed Southampton on Sunday hoping to put an end to a five-game winless streak.
