Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has expressed disappointment following his side’s shock 2-1 loss at Mainz in the German Bundesliga on Saturday and has identified how they can improve in further games.
A late goal by German forward Leroy Sane was not enough as a goal in each half by Mainz winger Lee Jae-Sung was enough to condemn the Bavarians to a first league defeat of the season under Kompany.
“Congratulations to Mainz. We played against a lively and spirited team. They were prepared to fight in every moment. We weren’t lacking our fighting spirit, though”, the Belgian said.
“We tried, but we’ve also done far better in the past. We weren’t at our best today. We’ve lost now – that always hurts – but we can still win plenty more in the future.”
Bayern Munich were lackluster in the entire game as they were only able to muster a single attempt on target and the defeat saw their lead at the top of the standings reduced to four points as second-placed Bayer Leverkusen ran out 2-0 winners over Ausburg on Saturday.
“The feeling here is that the team always wants to continue to take steps to improve. The game is over and we’ll use this defeat to build fire over the next few days before the Leipzig game on Friday”, he added.
Vincent Kompany’s side will play host to top four contenders, RB Leipzig on Friday in their final league match of the year before the Bundesliga pauses for the winter break.
