Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed his joy after being crowned the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, becoming the sixth Nigerian to win the prestigious honour.
The Atalanta star joined an elite list of Nigerian legends, including Rashidi Yekini and Nwankwo Kanu, after receiving the award in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday night.
Lookman bagging the award is as a result of his consistent performances for both club and country this year at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, and the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League final where he single-handedly scored three goals.
However, the 27-year-old remains grounded, choosing to focus on the impact his achievements could have on the next generation of players.
“For us to be able to give inspiration to the young kids who want to be like us is the most important thing,” Lookman said in his acceptance speech. “If we can set a good example, they have good footsteps to follow.”
As shared by Cafonline, The Nigerian international also took a moment to thank the fans who have supported him throughout his career.
“I am very appreciative of your love and care, and kind words in the bad moments also, not just the good moments,” he shared. “The people who show you love in the difficult moments are the people who you are most grateful to.”
Giant Gasperini’s men will tackle Cesena at the Coppa Italia quarterfinal tomorrow, and Lookman will be hoping to continue his positive impression.
