Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has admitted his desire to play at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, hinting at a potential exit from the Portuguese club during the next summer transfer window amid numerous speculations regarding his future.
The Swedish sensation has been a revelation since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, scoring an incredible 69 goals in 74 appearances across all competitions. So far this season, his goals have helped to keep the reigning Portuguese champions on top of Liga Portugal with 12 wins from 14 matches.
Gyökeres leads Europe’s top 10 leagues with 18 goals in 14 league games, surpassing stars like Robert Lewandowski (16) and Erling Haaland (13). His 62.9% big-chance conversion rate is a testament to his exceptional efficiency. He also boasts five Champions League goals, including a hat-trick in a dominant 4-1 win over Manchester City.
Owing to his recent spectacular form, the 26-year-old is now subject to transfer interest from top clubs across Europe with several reports claiming that he could soon be donning the colours of one of the Premier League giants and the Sweden international has not shied away from voicing his desire to earn a big move.
“We will see. There are many rumours circulating, but we are in the middle of the season, there are still many months left,” Gyokeres told Bladet after winning the Guldbollen award, awarded by the outlet to the best-performing Swedish player each year.
“We will see when the time comes what will happen. Playing in one of the best teams in Europe, that is the objective.”
However, Gyokeres remains grateful to the Portuguese club for their role in his development and is not worried about the timing of his next move.
“Sometimes it has been difficult. I’ve played many seasons in the Championship. It’s a very good and tough league, but it’s clear that I’ve always wanted to play in an important league,” he said.
“For me it doesn’t matter, it can take as long as necessary.
“When I got here I felt prepared. I could have come here when I was 19 or 20 years old, but perhaps I would not have performed at the same level as now.
“It’s difficult to understand that sometimes it’s real, but that stimulates me and I want to continue playing. You can always do better, score more goals.”
