The Friedkin Group has officially completed its acquisition of Everton, marking the end of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership of the struggling Premier League club.
An agreement was initially reached with Moshiri on 23 September, pending regulatory approvals. With the Premier League’s endorsement now secured, the takeover has been finalized.
The deal, involving a 99.5% stake in the club, is reportedly valued at over £400 million. This makes Everton the 10th Premier League team to come under majority American ownership.
Headquartered in Texas, the Friedkin Group is chaired by Dan Friedkin, who also owns Italian Serie A club AS Roma. According to American business media company Forbes, Friedkin’s net worth is estimated at £6.16 billion.
Friedkin is expected to serve as chairman of Everton’s board, while Marc Watts, president of the Friedkin Group, will take on the role of executive chairman, overseeing the club’s operations.
Announcing the completion of the takeover, new owner Friedkin said in an open letter; “I take immense pride in welcoming one of England’s most historic football clubs to our global family, the Friedkin Group.
“Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honoured to become custodians of this great institution.
“Whilst we are new to the club, we fully understand the vital role Everton plays in local culture, history, and the lives of Evertonians here and around the world. We are deeply committed to honouring this legacy while contributing positively to the community, economy, and people of this remarkable city.”
Currently struggling in the Premier League, Everton find themselves languishing dangerously close to the relegation zone. The Toffees are 16th on the standings, just three points above Ipswich Town, who currently occupy one of the relegation places.
Everton’s first game of the new era will be a crunch clash against Enzo Maresca’s high-flying Chelsea on Sunday, December 22. The game is billed to go down at Goodison Park and all eyes will certainly be on the new owners who are expected to be in attendance.
