Report: Napoli joins race to sign Manchester United defender

Former Italian Serie A champions, Napoli are reportedly interested in signing former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire at the end of the season.

The England international whose contract expires at the end of the summer could join the Italian side if he does not receive a favorable offer from the Red Devils.

Manchester United have the option to trigger a one-year extension until 2026 but the 30-year old could start negotiating with teams abroad from January if the option is not taken.

Maguire joined the Red Devils from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to become the most expensive defender in football history.

He has made 149 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and has played 13 times for the club this season.

Despite being named club captain under the Norwegian coach, he struggled to replicate the form he displayed at Leicester City which made Manchester United splash a whooping £80 million on him.

The former Hull City defender was stripped of captaincy and lost his spot under former manager Erik Ten Hag due to a combination of injuries and inconsistent performances on the pitch, but has been reintegrated back into the squad by Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, who has trusted him to be a key part of his defense.

A move to Naples could revive Maguire’s career and give him a way back into the Three Lions team under German coach Thomas Tuchel while also providing experience and defensive stability for Antonio Conte’s Napoli side.

His contract situation has put Napoli and other top European clubs on high alert with Turkish giants Galatasaray also said to be interested and it remains to be seen if he eventually makes a move away from the Theatre of Dreams.
