Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo considers Egyptian teammate Mohamed Salah, an important member of the squad and hopes the 32-year old extends his stay beyond the end of the season.
Salah’s contract expires at the end of the current season and although he has yet to agree an extension with the Reds, Gakpo believes the two-time African footballer of the year will remain at the club beyond the summer.
“It’s very special what we are all witnessing. The amount of goals he scores but the assists he gives as well, the way he plays the game, how he puts other attacking players or midfielders like myself in a position to score and to be dangerous is from a high level”, Gakpo said.
The former AS Roma and Chelsea forward has played a pivotal role in the Reds superb start to the season, as they stand at the summit of both the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
He scored twice and provided two assists in Sunday’s 6-3 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur taking him to fourth on the all-time goalscoring chart for the Reds. This season, he has scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists in 24 appearances in all competitions.
“I hope for us and for him that he can continue doing that for a long time. We are very lucky to have him and proud that we can be his teammate[s] and try to make him better. And he is trying to make us better as well”, he added.
Mohamed Salah and Liverpool are next in action when they play Leicester City on Boxing day, hoping to secure maximum points as they continue their surge at the top of the standings.
