Manuel Akanji frustrated with team’s performance after underwhelming draw with Everton

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has expressed disappointment with the team’s performance following their surprise 1-1 draw with Everton on Boxing day.

The Cityzens came into the game with just one win in their past twelve games, and were off to a flying start when they took the lead through a deflected Bernando Silva’s strike. The Toffees were however level before halftime through Iliman Ndiaye.

“I think this was a game today where we were able to score three, four goals, but it didn’t want to go in.

We still have to believe until the last moment that we can win the match. But it wasn’t possible today.”

They created lots of chances but could not find a way past a resolute Everton defence.

They were finally presented with a chance to regain their lead from twelve yards but England goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford saved from Erling Haaland’s poor penalty kick and Akanji believed the result was unfair to the Premier League Champions.

“I don’t think so, no. I think we did way more, we created lots of chances. Unfortunately we were only able to score one goal and we conceded one out of basically nothing, but that’s how football is”, he continued.

The draw continues a poor run of form for Pep Guardiola’s side as they have failed to win another match despite taking the lead.

“Also, it can’t happen that we almost lose the game in the last minutes. We are trying to attack but then we lose the ball and I think it’s like a six vs two situation in front of our goal. Luckily I could block the shot, but things like this can’t happen”, he added.

Manchester City have the chance to put an end to their slump when they travel to the Kings Power stadium to face Leicester City on Sunday.
