Wolves’ Pereira describes forward as ‘top player’ after outstanding display in Manchester United win

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira was full of praise for Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, after his brilliant individual performance in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Boxing Day.

The 25-year old scored a goal directly from a corner kick and provided the assist for Hwang Hee-Chan’s stoppage time strike, as Wolves moved out of the relegation zone with a second consecutive win.

“He is a top player”, Pereira said in a post match interview after the game.

“He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details. We try his corner because we want the swing inside to explore this. But you can work a lot and in the end nothing happens. With this kind of player this can happen.”

The match was the new boss second game in-charge and Cunha followed up his goal in the victory against Leicester City with another outstanding display at the Molineux.

“I am discovering day by day leaders within the team,” he added. “They want to do something. They want to change things.

I think it’s not about work, it’s individual quality. He’s a player in my opinion who can reach high standards in this league”, he added.

The former Atletico Madrid forward has scored 10 goals in 18 league games this season, and has also scored twice in two games since the Portuguese coach took over, growing into one of the most important players at the West Midland club.

Cunha will hope to continue his resurgent form on Sunday when Wolves travel to North London to face an out-of-form Tottenham Hotspur.
