Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that his future lies at the Etihad Stadium, with the Spanish tactician insisting that he will not give up on trying to change the fortunes of the struggling English champions.
The Cityzens were held to a 1-1 draw with Everton on Boxing Day, extending their winless streak to five matches across all competitions since they have managed a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
City’s league campaign has been a rollercoaster ride so far. After going unbeaten in their first nine PL games of the season, the reigning champions have now suffered six defeats from their last nine.
Guardiola, who only recently signed a contract extension with the embattled champions, has reiterated his commitment to the club. He insisted that he wanted to be at Manchester City and help the team overcome its current challenges.
“I will try, I will keep going,” Guardiola said at Saturday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Leicester City.
“I will not give up. I want to be here. I want to do it and, with the situation that we have, we have to do it. Of course I want it, everyone wants it.
“I don’t want to disappoint my people in terms of the club, the fans, the people who love this club.”
City have struggled with injuries throughout the season, notably losing Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to an ACL injury in September. Last season, they were unbeaten in 34 Premier League matches with Rodri but lost three of the four games he missed.
Guardiola has also lost several key players to injuries at different points of the season but the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager insists injuries are no excuse for his side’s poor run of results.
“Sometimes you have injuries,” Guardiola continued. “For how many years we were incredibly consistent but now, yes, we’re a little bit down and the main reason is having so many important players injured.
“But I saw the team spirit, how we trained this week, how focused they are, how they try to practice. We saw that against Everton but unfortunately we couldn’t get the result we wanted.”
