Former Nigerian international Taye Taiwo, believes Reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman has to decide to leave Italian side Atalanta this winter.
The former Super Eagles defender who made 54 appearances for his country through a span of eight years, believes the Atalanta forward is in the form of his life and should make the switch to a top European club in the January transfer window, while his sale will be beneficial to the club as he enters the final year of his current contract.
“The situation is delicate for Lookman and Atalanta,” Taiwo stated in an interview with Africafoot.
“The club is in a good position to win Serie A, and they will surely not want to part ways with their best player. However, if you think in terms of financial benefits, the timing is perfect.
He is one of the most high-profile players in Europe, and many clubs would do anything to sign him,” Taiwo continued.
Lookman has been one of Europe’s in-form star in the past year and was instrumental as Atalanta were crowned Europa League Champions in the 2023/24 season with a remarkable hat-trick in the 3-0 final win over Bayer Leverkusen.
This season, he has 12 goals and has provided five assists in 20 appearances in all competitions as Atalanta are currently poised to challenge for the Italian Serie A.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, Taye Taiwo believes it is a crucial time for Lookman to take a significant step towards achieving the next’ big thing’ in his career by sealing a big-money move.
