Postecoglou expresses optimism in making ‘top four’ despite recent struggles

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou, has refused to give up on his side’s chances of improving on their current position in the league.

Speaking after the disappointing 2-2 draw against Wolves where they conceded a late equalizer, the 59-year old was unhappy with their recent slump and expressed that the team will be back to their best when key players return from injuries.

“It’s still fairly tight. At some point we will get a healthy squad and we’ll be able to perform at a high level. We’ve shown we can beat anyone”, he said.

Spurs have only won once in their past seven league matches, against relegation-threatened Southampton, and are without a win at home since a 4-1 triumph over Aston Villa in early November.

“There’s always a chance to go on a run. That is secondary to getting support to the players both physically and mentally and in terms of numbers.

We’re dealing with a fair bit and we’re not getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back to allow us to freshen up the team. When we get one back, we lose one.”

The North London side are 11th on the log and they face a battle to secure a ‘top four’ finish at the end of the season as they are currently 11 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea who have a game in hand.

“We have to try to get some support for the players. Both mentally and physically and in terms of numbers to give them the opportunity to play at their best”, the former Celtic manager continued.

“They’re very disappointed, but it’s not through the want of trying.”

Spurs have the chance to put an end to their poor run when they host in-form Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kickoff.
