Juventus manager Thiago Motta was left frustrated by his side’s profligacy in the final third as the Old Lady settled for yet another draw in Serie A against Fiorentina at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.
Khephren Thuram’s early goal was equalized by former Juventus striker Moise Kean before the French midfielder put the hosts back in front shortly after halftime. However, Riccardo Sottil’s spectacular 87th-minute strike earned La Viola a draw in Turin, leaving Juve frustrated once again.
Juventus, the only unbeaten team in Serie A this season, remain sixth in the table with 32 points, tied with fifth-placed Fiorentina, who have a game in hand. They are the first team to go unbeaten in the first 18 games of a Serie A season since their own 2018/2019 campaign.
The Bianconeri have drawn 11 of their 18 Serie A matches this season, the most in Europe’s top five leagues. Despite registering 15 attempts on goal, Motta’s charges managed to get only five on target and failed to capitalize on their chances.
“I’m very happy, the idea is to continue attacking and not sit back and concede goals,” Motta told Sky Sport. “I wouldn’t focus on defensive naivety, but on closing out a game. We must get to the third goal. We can manage it better there.
“They shot very little, in my opinion, and we deserved more, but in the end the result counts. And the result says that we weren’t able to close it out. We had many good moments, that’s why I say that the right thing to do was to close it out.”
Pressed further on whether Juve’s missed chances could be put down to bad luck, Motta emphasized the need for greater clinical precision rather than attributing missed opportunities to luck.
“No, I don’t believe in these things,” Motta said.
“We definitely need to improve our precision. That’s where the difference is. If the ball goes in, the game is over, otherwise the opposing team stays alive.”
