Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim confessed that his side are in danger of slipping into the dark waters of relegation battle after suffering yet another disappointing defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Monday night.
The Red Devils were condemned to a 2-0 defeat courtesy of first half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton, leaving them in 14th place with 22 points from 19 games and just seven points ahead of Ipswich Town in the relegation zone.
Monday night’s result marked the first time United have lost three consecutive home games in 46 years and also sealed their fourth straight defeat across all competitions. Speaking after the game, Amorim admitted that his side were in dire straits.
“Our club needs a shock and we have to understand that,” he said. “It is also why I speak of relegation. That is really clear [the possibility] and we have to fight.
“It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty and to be clear with that, we have to fight [in] the next game.”
The Portuguese manager, who has suffered six defeats in his first eleven games in charge of United, also revealed that his ability to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window will depend on whether the club can raise funds through player sales.
“We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take [sell] some players,” Amorim said. “You know the situation better than me. It is not that I am arriving here and can spend money changing the team.”
