Arne Slot weighs in on Manchester United struggles ahead of Anfield clash

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Manchester United while speaking ahead of his side’s highly anticipated Anfield battle against the Red Devils on Sunday, emphasizing that their current low league position does not reflect their true quality.

The Reds currently lead both the Premier League and Champions League standings, while United, struggling with four consecutive losses, are 23 points behind their long-time rivals and languishing in 14th position on the table.

During his pre-match press conference, Slot was questioned whether he might consider resting some of his key players for the game against their out-of-sorts rivals. “A strange question,” the Dutch coach laughed, “no I don’t plan to. It’s a big game. For me, I said it before the first fixture and one more time, they have much better players than the league table shows.

“It will take a while, maybe, for Ruben Amorim, but they will definitely go up, and they are much, much, much better than the league table shows. He did so well at Sporting, he has a good squad of players and he [will] eventually bring the best out of them.”

Liverpool last welcomed Man United to Anfield back in December 2023 in a match that saw the Red Devils, then under the tutelage of former manager Erik ten Hag, battle out a 0-0 draw despite facing as many as 34 shots. This outcome was brought to Slot’s attention and the Dutchman said in response;

“Every game is a difficult one in the Premier League. It is more important for them to win at Anfield, we have to be really well prepared.”

Despite Slot’s lofty words about Amorim and United, the Liverpool boss and his team will surely be heading into this matchup with plenty of confidence, especially in light of the contrasting fortunes of both teams at this moment in time. Certainly, it promises to be an enthralling encounter at Merseyside.
