The former Leicester City boss revealed this during the pre-match presser for the game on Friday.
Chelsea head into the fixture having lost their last two Premier League games against Ipswich Town and Fulham.
James is likely to make just a cameo appearance. But he will likely get more minutes in the coming weeks if he stays healthy.
