Manchester United trigger important clause in Harry Maguire’s contract

Former English Premier League champions Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension clause in Harry Maguire’s contract.

Maguire has had a rollercoaster experience since his record €87 million transfer from Leicester City in 2019. The Englishman started well at the club, but he later became one of the most maligned players at the club three years into his stay.

There were even serious talks that he would leave Old Trafford after he was stripped off the captain’s armband two seasons ago. However, he has remained at the club and has been a regular under coach Ruben Amorim. This season, he has featured in 16 games across all competitions for Manchester United.

Maguire’s contract at Manchester United is supposed to expire at the end of the current campaign.

However, according to Transfermarkt, the club have now triggered a one-year extension in the 31-year-old’s contract. This will keep him at Manchester United until the end of next season.

This is a decent move by the Red Devils who are lacking quality center-backs. The other top center-backs at Manchester United are Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United are expected to be busy in the next two transfer windows. They need reinforcements in different areas of the pitch and they must also be able to function in Ruben Amorim’s unique setup.

Players like Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelof, and Christian Eriksen are expected to leave this January or in June.
