Former Ipswich Town footballer Matt Holland has condemned Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, for his role in Sunday’s 2-2 draw between the Cottagers and the Tractor Boys.
The Nigerian defender who was making his 19th league appearance of the season was at fault when a lapse in concentration resulted in the first goal.
His sliced clearance fell to Ipswich Town forward Sammie Szmodics, whose effort deflected off Bassey again to beat Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno at the near post.
“It’s wonderful play from Broadhead, the awareness, the space that he’s in to try and pick out that ball at the far post.
It’s a horrible clearance from Calvin Bassey straight to Szmodics who is composed enough to hit the target and find the back of the net. All his Premier League goals for Ipswich have come away from home, add this one to his tally”, Matt Holland said.
“Horrible moment for Calvin Bassey. First of all the clearance and then the deflection off him into the back of the net. Don’t defend it well at all Fulham.”
Mexican striker Raul Jimenez equalized for the Cottagers through a penalty kick in the second half before Liam Delap also scored from the spot to give the Tractor Boys the lead back in the game.
Jimenez’s stoppage time penalty kick, his second of the game, secured an all-important point for Marco Silva’s side as they avoided defeat against the relegation-threatened side.
Bassey will hope to put his mistake behind when he and his teammates are in action against Watford in the FA cup third round on Thursday.
