Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was visibly disappointed with yesterday’s entertaining 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, and has urged his teammates to be more ambitious.
The Red devils came into the match on the back of four consecutive defeats and languishing in the bottom half of the table, but produced what was a very impressive outing, as they held the table-toppers to a draw.
They stuck to coach Ruben Amorim’s game plan and took a surprise lead in the 52nd minute through Lisandro Martinez after good work from Fernandes in the build-up.
“We have been criticised, and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points”, the Portuguese international said after the game.
“Even today we can’t be happy with a point. We need the points and we could have won the game at the end, but it’s a fair result. Both teams played good football.”
The Reds hit back seven minutes later through Dutch forward Cody Gakpo, before Manchester United ‘nemesis’ Mohamed Salah scored a penalty kick to put Arne Slot’s side ahead for the first time in the match.
“I’m pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can’t we do this everywhere? It frustrates me.
Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season. Being 2-1 [down] then scoring, it is good to get a point but we need more.”
Manchester United hit back minutes later through Amad Diallo and could have won the game with virtually the last kick of the match, when Harry Maguire blasted over inside the box.
“We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. We put in a real effort, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that’s why we took something from today”, he continued.
The Red Devils travel to the Emirates on Sunday to face Arsenal in the FA cup third round, before hosting bottom-placed Southampton in the Premier League four days later.
