Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique commended his side’s determination and fighting spirit following their 1-0 victory over Monaco in the Trophee des Champions.
Ousmane Dembele secured the win in the second minute of stoppage time, capping off a match where Les Parisiens had dominated proceedings on the attacking front, creating 27 chances and hitting the woodwork, without managing to find the back of the net.
Dembele’s goal, scored after 91 minutes and 28 seconds, marked the latest winning goal in Trophee des Champions history, surpassing the previous record set by Alex in August 2013 (94 minutes and 30 seconds, also with PSG against Bordeaux).
“Today it was a very difficult game, against an opponent with very high-quality players and a lot of attacking ones,” Luis Enrique told PSG TV.
“We had… moments of domination and moments of defensive suffering, but I think that in the end, the goal did justice to a team that never stops fighting, that continues to attack, that does not stop running, that does not stop defending. I think it is something very positive and that we must continue to value.”
The Trophee des Champions is traditionally played by the winners of Ligue 1 and Coupe de France from the previous season. However, Paris Saint-Germain faced last campaign’s Ligue 1 runners-up after winning both trophies last term and the French champions extended their haul in this competition to thirteen triumphs.
“Winning a title is always a source of joy,” Luis Enrique added.
“Starting 2025 this way, in an almost full stadium, with a lot of Parisian supporters in it… it gives us confidence, it’s important for morale, and we have to enjoy it before thinking about the future.
“With the game idea that we have and the profile of our players, we must continue to grow as a team, to improve in any situation.”
