The Nigerian Football Federation has announced the appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as new head coach of the Super Eagles.
According to the NFF, the decision to hire the foreign coach was reached during a meeting head at the federation’s headquarters in Abuja, on Thursday 2nd January, 2025.
The report also states that Chelle’s appointment was recommended by members of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, and approved by the Executive Committee of the federation.
The former Mali international is set to commence his managerial role with immediate effect, with the primary target being to lead the Super Eagles to the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The team are currently placed fifth in group C of the World Cup qualifiers, with just three points from a possible 12 in four matches.
The 47-year old’s appointment comes after his spell as manager of the Malian national team in 2022, were he led them to the African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, before being fired in June 2024 after the team dropped to fourth in Group I of the World Cup qualifications.
With the Super Eagles in a rather similar situation, it remains to be seen whether Chelle will be the man to turn things around.
