President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, is confident the Super Falcons will reclaim their crown at the 2025 Women African Cup of Nations, while stating that the Federation is taking steps to ensure it happens.
The Nigerian women team who have won 11 of the 14 editions, lost their crown in the 2022 edition to the Banyana Banyana of South Africa, who defeated Morocco 2-1 in the final for their first-ever title.
“My projection is that we are going to get back out trophy because as far as I’m concerned that trophy belong to Nigeria and that’s why we are not taking any chances. Every single FIFA window we will give them the opportunity to have quality friendly match”, Gusau said.
“Before the WAFCON I think we have about two windows which we intend to make sure that we utilize them effectively to make sure they have good preparation.”
The Super Falcons who have finished in the last four in all 14 editions of the tournament, have been placed in Group B where they will face Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana.
“We are not going to relent, we will still try and make sure that we do what we need to do to ensure that we don’t rely on only the foreign players.
As I’ve said we are trying to see how we can inject young girls from our local league which we feel are going to bring a lot of positive impact into the team.”, the President continued.
The tournament is scheduled to take place later this year, between the 5th and 26th of July 2025 in Morocco who also hosted the previous edition of the competition.
