Eric Chelle: Nigerian legend tips Super Eagles head coach for successful stint

Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba, has backed new Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to succeed despite mixed reactions surrounding his appointment.

The Malian coach was appointed as permanent coach earlier this week, to replace Austin Eguavoen who was named temporary coach after Finidi George left his role in June 2024. His appointment by the Nigerian Football Federation has gathered mixed reviews nationwide, with many citing his inexperience as a major factor.
“The appointment of a coach for the Super Eagles will always generate a lot of interest. This is one of the biggest countries in Africa, and that’s the passion that comes with the national team”, Ikpeba said.
“Even if we had appointed Pep Guardiola (Manchester City coach), there would still be complaints. If there are no arguments, there won’t be success.”

However, Ikpeba, who won the 1994 AFCON and the 1996 Olympic gold medal in the green jerseys of the Super Eagles, has called for support for the new coach, whose major task is leading the country to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Eric Chelle is a young coach who will succeed with our support,” Ikpeba continued.
“We’re in a tight corner in the World Cup qualifying campaign, and we must back him to get the best out of the players, who are the main actors in this situation. I am optimistic that with the support of Nigerians, we will still qualify for the World Cup.”

The 47-year old coach is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Nigerian Football Federation this weekend, with his first official match in charge being a World cup qualifying fixture against Rwanda in March.
