Enyimba FC’s aspirations in the CAF Confederation Cup are in jeopardy following a 1-1 draw against Egypt’s Al Masry on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Al Masry seized an early advantage in the 7th minute when Mohamed Hashem capitalized on a defensive lapse to put the visitors ahead. Despite Enyimba’s efforts to respond, they entered halftime trailing 1-0.
The Nigerian side equalized shortly after the break, with Ifeanyi Ihemekwele heading in a goal in the 47th minute. Goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena was instrumental in maintaining the draw, notably saving a penalty in the 68th minute. However, Enyimba couldn’t secure a winning goal, leaving them with five points from a possible fifteen in five matches.
This result places Enyimba third in Group D, trailing leaders Zamalek, who have 11 points and have secured a quarterfinal spot. Al Masry hold second place with six points. To advance, Enyimba must win their final group match against Zamalek and hope that Black Bulls either defeat or draw with Al Masry in the next encounter.
Enyimba’s final group stage match is a must-win to keep their continental campaign alive, coupled with a favorable outcome in the Al Masry vs. Black Bulls fixture.
