Eric Chelle: New Super Eagles coach vows to implement attacking style, promises lots of goals

Newly-appointed Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle, in his inauguration by the Nigerian Football Federation, has pledged to build an attacking team assured with a lot of goals.

The 47-year old who left his role as head coach of Algerian side MC Oran on Saturday, to take over from Austin Eguavoen as the Nigerian male team coach, made the promise during his unveiling as the 37th head coach of the National team in Abuja earlier today.

Nigeria is blessed with abundant attacking talents, and have produced the past two CAF footballer of the year awards with on-loan Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen winning the 2023 edition, and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman winning the 2024 edition of the awards, and the new boss has promised to harness their potentials to full effect.

“I have always had a love for scoring goals. My teams are never short of goals, and I promise the Super Eagles will be no different,” Chelle said.

“Football is about scoring goals and I favour an attacking style. I know the expectations of Nigerians and I will settle down and work diligently with assistants towards the goal of qualifying the Super Eagles to the 2026 World Cup”, he continued.

The former Mali National team coach signed a two-year contract with the NFF, and is tasked majorly with ensuring that the country qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after missing out on the last edition in Qatar.

Despite mixed reactions surrounding his appointment, with many citing his inexperience as a factor, he is expected to lead the nation into a new era of free-flowing attacking football.
