Paul Onuachu: Turkish giants weighing up move for Nigerian forward to bolster attacking options

Former Turkey Super League Champions Besiktas, are reportedly eyeing a move for Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.

The Southampton forward who has been frequently linked with a move away from the St Marys in search of more playing time, has been linked to the Turkish giants as they look to provide support for Italian striker Ciro Immobile in attack.

The 30-year old moved to England to join the Saints in January 2023 from Belgian side Genk after a very productive time at The Smurfs, but has failed to live up to the billing since his move.

He has struggled for playing time and consistency and has been unable to recapture his scoring feat at Belgium.

The Super Eagles striker moved to Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the 2023/24 season and was able to rediscover his scoring touch with 17 goals and four assists from 24 appearances in all competitions, prompting the Turkish side to tender a transfer request for his permanent signature. A deal could not materialize as their offer was way below Southampton’s valuation of the 6 ft 7 forward.

This season, he has struggled for consistency and has no goal contribution from 12 games in all competitions, with English forward Adam Armstrong usually preferred to him.

Besiktas currently sit sixth in the Turkey Super League, and are on course for another continental finish by the end of the season.

Onuachu’s experience and clinical finishing inside the penalty area will be vital for the Black Eagles, as they look to ease the scoring pressure off Ciro Immobile and a move could be on the cards for the forward if they are able to match Southampton’s valuation.
